Why I Do What I Do

Starting a new day at the Library

Starting a new day at the Library

It is a nice and sunny day in Toronto but looks can be deceiving. Although it’s April 23, the high for today is only 12 degrees. I know it sucks but I couldn’t careless what the weather is outside. I can work from home whenever I want, an awesome perk.

Sometimes it’s easy to lose focus or interesting in whatever it is we do. I could be school, work or business.

Having a “why” is one way to keep focus.

A Little over a year (Jan 2012) ago I decided to start my own business developing web and mobile apps. Simple apps that others will hopefully find useful. For example, www.jamaicanize.com – a simple Jamaican translator. Currently the number one app for learning to speak Jamaican.

My “why” is Freedom.

Freedom to work on whatever, wherever, and whenever I want. Money is important but it is not my sole motivator of why I decided to start a business. Similarly, fame is not a reason why I decided to start a business. Jamaicanize get 100s 1000s of visits per day and my name is not plaster all over the site.

Freedom is why I do what I do. Fame is secondary and money is way of gauge whether or not the apps I’m making is useful.

The image above is a great example of me choosing to work wherever I want. Today I’m at the library, tomorrow it could be a coffee shop or another country.

Choose your “why” and use it to keep focus.

Quick Update

April 22, 2013

Over the past year I’ve been building my own business and products.Take a look at some of the products I’ve developed so far.

There are a lot more ideas on my list that I’ll be working on in the coming weeks.

Quick tip: One of the most important things I’ve learned is to charge for products.

Business is about making money.

I have business expenses to pay for. Getting a million free downloads will not earn my business a dime. I would rather release a product to 100 paying customers and provide awesome support.

You don’t have to be local

Two hours spent being useful to one person who wants to “pick my brain” is two hours I’d rather spend making something that could be useful to the whole world (including that one person). Derek Sivers
